A Cup Of Water Under My Bed

For this weeks blog post I read the book A Cup of Water Under My Bed by Daisy Hernandez. This book is a collection of short stories that Hernandez wrote about her life as she continued to grow up specifically involving the differences she encounters growing up as a young Hispanic girl in America. Two sections of this book that I found particularly interesting were Stories She Tells Us and Only Ricos have Credit.

A Cup of Water Under My Bed: A Memoir A coming-of-age memoir by a Colombian-Cuban woman about shaping lessons from home into a new, queer life. In this lyrical, coming-of-age memoir, Daisy. A Cup of Water Under My Bed - 'Condemned' - 'Stories She Tells Us' Summary & Analysis Daisy Hernandez This Study Guide consists of approximately 51 pages of chapter summaries, quotes, character analysis, themes, and more - everything you need to sharpen your knowledge of A Cup of Water Under My Bed.

Stories She Tells Us surrounds the “bedtime” stories that Daisy’s mother tells her. However the title of this passage is quite misleading because the stories her mother tells her are not your typical bedtime stories like fairy tales and epic adventure novels. She tells Daisy stories of her actual real life experiences of when she was growing up in Colombia. The stories are somewhat harsh and display the hardships that Daisy’s family had to go through in order to get to America. A quote from this passage I found interesting was when Daisy states; “There is always the child learning the nature of fear, the promise of happy endings. The stories my mother tells are crowded with monsters.” I believe that the real purpose behind these stories that Daisy’s mother tells her is that even though growing up as a Hispanic in America has its struggles, Daisy is still lucky to have the opportunity to grow up in the land of opportunity. The other passage in this novel that I thought was interesting was Only Ricos Have Credit. The reason I found it interesting was because I thought it was a very cliché passage about Daisy getting a job and getting her first paycheck. I didn’t really like this passage because I felt that it was the repeat of a story that you hear thousands of times. Drivers bvrp software. Someone less fortunate gets a job and their first paycheck and begins to splurge on little things and then continues to go overboard. I didn’t think this passage really had a major importance to the novel because I felt that Daisy would have had other stories that would have been more interesting to share about her time she spent growing up.

I feel like a further reading from this book would be hard for me because I am not sure I can completely relate to where Daisy comes from as someone faced with hardship throughout her life. Not to say that I had it easy growing up and I had to work hard for what I got but I was still fortunate enough to have a supportive family that was able to provide for me and help me to get a higher education.
